Recently, we Teesupport PC Help centre has received many customers who have been attacked by l.yimg.com things. Here are some examples collected by our stuff.

“When I try to go to Yahoo.com or Yahoo.mail, I see that it is trying to access another site: l.yimg.com. But end result is I cannot access Yahoo anything. I am a novice at computer virus-spyware-adware detection and don't know what to do.”



“If I load it in Internet Explorer or on my Droid 4, “Waiting for l.yimg” pop-up comes up right away. If I ping it from the command prompt, it responds promptly.”



“Safari wouldn't load yahoo and stalled when trying to pull info from l.yimg.com. So I installed Firefox. And it worked...for about 3 weeks. Then it quit. The same thing happens. So I installed Chrome. No access. 3 browsers, same machine, no access with the "connecting to l.yimg.com" flag in the corner.”

After seeing these cases, we can know that l.yimg.com mainly attacks users who use Yahoo browser. Many computer victims claim that if they try to open Yahoo.com or Yahoo.mail, a loading page appears with words like “transferring data from l.ymig.com or “Waiting for l.yimg”


Mostly, users need to wait several minutes to load a page, and sometimes they may message “this page not responding” and they fail to access the Yahoo.com site. In some cases, victims may see l.yimg popups shown when they want to visit certain sites, the pop-up windows keep hanging on the corner of the screen to state that needs to wait for l.yimg.com to load. In such case, you are not able to access the intended sites. In addition, it can be easy to corrupt the original browsers and slow down the speed of the system.

Basically, we can classify L.yimg.com as a kind of browser hijacker that can be installed on all brands of internet browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Sarafi or others (especially Yahoo). Once picked up this redirect, it will modify the default settings of the browsers and hijack the homepage and start-up search. As the attackers, you may see your homepage has been changed into http://l.yimg.com. Each time they start to search on the browsers, ling.com comes up which cannot block at all. 1.  Stop all running processes by pressing Alt and Ctrl and Delete key together to open Task Manager.


2.  Disable any suspicious startup items. 

For Windows XP:
Step: Click Start menu -> click Run -> type: msconfig in the search bar -> open System Configuration Utility -> Disable all possible startup items including those of l.yimg.com.





3.   Remove add-ons on your infected browsers:


Internet Explorer:

1) Click on ‘Customize and control’ Google Chrome icon, select ‘Settings’;
2) Choose ‘Basic Options’;
3) Change Google Chrome’s homepage to google.com or any other and click the ‘Manage Search Engines…’ button;
4) Select ‘Google’ from the list and make it your default search engine;
5) Select ‘Search Result’ from the list to remove it by clicking the ‘X’ mark. 
Mozilla Firefox
1) Click on the magnifier’s icon and select ‘Manage Search Engine…’;
2) Choose ‘Search Results’ from the list and click ‘Remove’ and OK to save changes;
3) Go to ‘Tools’ -> “Options”. Reset the startup homepage or change it to google.com under ‘General tab;  

4. Show hidden files   

Step: a) open Control Panel from Start menu and search for Folder Options;
b) Under View tab to tick Show hidden files and folders and non-tick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) and then click OK;



5. Disable proxy

1).    Click on Tools on the menu bar
2).    Select Internet options
3).    Go to Connections tab
4).    Select LAN settings at the bottom of the dialog
5).    Under the Proxy sever, untick 'use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections).'
6).    Click OK



6. Remove all infected files and registry as follows:
